Powers Of Three Psi Phi’s 2007 and latest album continues to demonstrate their versatility and assured grasp of the melodic heavy rock genre spliced with equal measures of inventive rhythms and funk. It features great and varied performances from all three musicians. Pod maintains his masterful control over guitar riffs, chords and colours, Andy delivers both funk and rock in equal measures on bass, whilst Rob maintains his tight, effective and non-predictable drum lines to drive everything forward cleanly and rhythmically; all without muddying the crunch of the overall product. The album is a pseudo two-sided LP format with the first side taken up by 4 very strong and varied songs. The second side is a prog-rock number in seven parts written by Pod. Tracks are: All Fall Down, Masterplan, Elemental, Crow Flies East, Argument (Parts i to vii)
Circles Their second album released in 2003. Produced by Psi Phi on 16 track digital it demonstrates an improvement in production quality over the first album, in that there are less instrumental compromises made in the mix. The content is inventive and it shows that Psi Phi did not suffered from the common ‘second album’ syndrome that affects so many bands. This is in part due to the time that the band took in producing their second album without external pressures from contract or label, and partly due to their continuing native chemistry. The band is right of course ‘A million flies can’t be wrong’ and ‘A Million Flies’ is a storming opener. ‘I Rise’ has some very strong hooks and lingers in the mind’s ear long after. ‘Chimes for Jamie’ is beautifully introspective and ‘Circles’ is an excellent and pleasing instrumental journey. Of course ‘She Rocks’ is also worthy of mention not just for it’s hard punching riffs. Tracks are: A Million Flies ; I Rise ; Crazy ; Take Back The World ; Change Comes Round ; Four Seasons ; Chimes for Jamie ; Circles ; Sorry ; She Rocks
Welcome To Earth This is Psi Phi’s debut album released in 2001 produced by Psi Phi on 8 track analogue. The sound is much larger than one would expect from such humble facilities. Skilfully done lads! The content is inventive and satisfying (not in a hamburger way of course) and constitutes a great opener for the band. This is an album that still keeps creeping back into my car CD carousel.
Tracks are: Ragnarok 'n' Roll ; Another Lovesong ; Science Fiction ; Forever and a Day ; Waiting for the Words ; I Don't Want No-One Else ; Dark Day ; Right Place, Wrong Time ; Looking-Glass War ; Where did the Good Times Go?
