Pig’n’aif
Pig’n’aif is both a band and a music project working in conjunction with Rising Records. The band name is pronounced - in a typical Yorkshire accent - as Pig-an-Ayf. (Please feel free to use it as a surreptitious curse - we do...). The name was originally born out of frustration and reflects the fact that it has often been a pig (and an ’aif) to bring these music and recording projects to fruition, or indeed to get the musicians together to play the material, but it also reflects a lighter side to things.
Pig’n’aif News
Well they’ve gone and done it again. They have completed and released another album for your edification and delectation.
The ’Pig’n’aif Blue’ album is now released into the assembled populace and even though we say it ourselves - we are very proud of it. It would make a handsome addition to anyone’s album collection. The album is exclusively blues rock standards taken from the Pig’n’aif jam-band set, with arrangements and treatments of the material in the band’s own style. In other words it does not copy the stylings of other artists who have performed them - as there have been so many over the years - although it may well nod in their general directions. It has already received good critical acclaim and feedback.
The Pig’n’aif music project started out when Pete Bangert started his musical exploration on guitar and in writing with his good friend Steve Atkinson and then recorded his first demo track in 1969 on the Akai belonging to Steve. This started the Pig’n’aif collaborations and projects, initially with Steve and bassist Dave Hobson (who was a constant performer on the local scene). The first set of output was entitled ‘What’s In A Name!’ and contained a mixed range of rock ballad, boogie and progressive material and was on very limited cassette format release.
Pete worked away in Scotland for a couple of years in progressive rock bands before returning to Sheffield to embark on the next of his collaborations with Dave and Steve. Pete and Dave took Pig’n’aif down to Oxford for a period of time, collaborating with a number of pro and semi-pro musos before returning it eventually to Sheffield. This was also a constant period of writing and generated output that would later surface under Pig’n’aif, Phoenix Rising and Dave’s own band projects.
Over the years there have been a number of releases from Pig’n’aif either as a means of publishing recordings prior to use in bands or as a form of musical documentation by Pete and his collaborators.
Pig’n’aif released a prog-rock album recently on Rising Records entitled ‘The Jester... Thinks...’. This album by Pete Bangert with vocals from Mick Shedd forms part of the material for the ChinWig project.
